Children, Birth to Three Years
VIPS serves children who are blind, visually impaired, or multiply disabled, and who are under the age of three years, through the First Steps program in Kentucky and Southern Indiana. These services can include:
- Assessment
VIPS staff conducts developmental assessments, functional vision assessments, and O&M assessments as needed.
- In-Home Early Intervention
VIPS teachers visit children in their homes whenever possible. Children are also seen in child care settings as needed, and consultation is offered to caregivers.
- Play & Learn (PAL) Class -- VIPS-Louisville only
Play and Learn Class is offered for children, birth to three, and their parents/caregivers each Wednesday, 10:00 am - 12:00 noon. PAL class provides children with a therapeutic play setting where they have an opportunity to interact with others and to experience a more structured environment, in preparation for going to preschool. This class also receives Music Therapy where a certified music therapist engages participants in structured developmental music activities. Transportation is available on a limited basis.
- 2 Day 2's Class -- VIPS-Louisville only
This class is for 2 year old children who receive services from VIPS to come without their parents on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9-12 PM. In this class children work on preschool readiness to help them in the transition from First Steps at age three. We work on social skills and classroom routines. The children learn about circle time, story time, and center time. Music Therapy group sessions are also incorporated weekly to further reinforce appropriate social behaviors in a school setting. We enjoy playing outdoors when the weather is nice. So far this school year we've worked on learning our classmates names, how to share and take turns. We are learning our colors by making collages and learning about the fall season and holidays. The cost for this class is $50.00 per week, however, financial assistance may be available for those who need it.

Play groups with fun thematic activities are held throughout the year.
- Park PAL's (summer) -- VIPS-Louisville only
PAL class moves to local parks for summer sessions, exploring water features and playgrounds for cool summer fun.
